1,258 Days in the Shelter, Mator’s Fight for a Forever Home

On March 15, 2022, Mator’s world shattered.

At just 6 years old, the only family he had ever known tied him to a pole outside the Humane Society of Greater Miami. The next morning, shelter staff found him. Abandoned, confused, and alone. Since then, Mator has spent over 1,258 DAYS in the shelter. That’s more than three birthdays behind kennel doors, watching his face turn grey and seeing countless puppies and smaller dogs get adopted while he continues to wait.

When I heard his story, I was horrified. I knew I had to meet him.

When I took him out for a day out of the kennel, I was shocked. Mator has so much life left to live. At 9 years old and 70 lbs, he was bouncing with energy! Jumping, running, chasing toys, and showing me a joy that made me laugh out loud. Honestly? He had more energy than my 5-year-old chocolate Lab, Enzo, LOL.

Then the sadness hit me: this vibrant, playful dog has been spending all that energy inside a kennel for more than 1,200 days. He doesn’t belong there. He belongs in a home.

Why You Shouldn’t Overlook Mator

• Good with female dogs (he’d love a sister!).
